Inster CROSS
“Small but perfect?”
1. Design: Small Car, Big Personality
The INSTER Cross is one of those cars that immediately feels different.
It is short, upright and a little playful, while the Cross version adds enough rugged-looking details to make it feel more adventurous than a normal city EV. From the front and side, we actually like that character a lot. It looks compact without looking boring, and there is something quite charming about how seriously it takes its little-SUV appearance.
Constantin has one exception: the rear.
Hyundai’s rectangular pixel-style design language works well in many places, but from behind the INSTER feels a little too square and graphic for his taste. That is obviously completely subjective, though — and Sarah is probably right when she says nobody buys a family car based solely on Constantin’s opinion of the taillights.
The important part is that the INSTER has personality. In a segment full of small cars that try not to offend anyone, that is already refreshing.
2. Interior Flexibility: This Is Where It Gets Clever
The real surprise starts when you open the doors.
For such a small car, the INSTER makes unusually good use of its interior. The seats are highly flexible, and being able to slide them around means you can decide whether you currently need more passenger space or more luggage space.
That sounds simple, but with a child it becomes genuinely useful.
One day you need room behind the front passenger for a child seat. The next day the stroller, shopping or travel bags are taking priority. Being able to shift the layout around makes the car feel much larger than its exterior dimensions suggest.
The front seating area is also interesting because of its more open, almost bench-like layout. That makes the cabin feel less divided than in most small cars and gives you a surprising amount of freedom when getting in, reaching across or dealing with all the little things family life throws into the front row.
3. Yes, You Can Basically Make a Bed
This was probably the feature we had the most fun with.
The seats can be folded down in a way that creates an impressively flat space through the cabin. Is it suddenly a full camper? No.
Did we immediately start imagining sleeping in it?
Absolutely.
There is something wonderfully unnecessary but genuinely useful about a tiny electric car that can transform into a little sleeping setup. For spontaneous adventures, a quick rest on a road trip or simply entertaining a toddler while parked somewhere, it gives the INSTER a level of flexibility you would never expect from looking at it.
It is also exactly the kind of feature we love at BHWR.
Not because every family is going to sleep in their INSTER every weekend, but because it shows that somebody actually thought about how people could use the space differently.
And yes, turning your tiny city car into a bed is objectively fun.
4. Space: Much Better Than a Small Car Has Any Right to Be
The INSTER is still a small car, so nobody should expect the interior of a large SUV.
But within those limitations, it is seriously impressive.
The upright body gives passengers more usable headroom, and the movable seating means rear passengers can have a surprising amount of space when the boot is not your main priority.
For a family with one child, it works particularly well. A child seat fits into the overall layout without making the entire car feel unusable, and there is enough flexibility to adjust the cabin around whatever you are carrying that day.
For two children, you naturally need to think more carefully about luggage and stroller size, but as a compact second car — or even a main car for a family that mostly lives in town — there is much more here than the exterior dimensions suggest.
That is probably the biggest compliment we can give it:
it rarely feels as small from the inside as it looks from the outside.
5. Driving: Exactly What a Small EV Should Feel Like
The electric drivetrain suits the INSTER perfectly.
You do not need enormous performance in a car this size. What matters is instant response in town, easy acceleration into gaps and a drivetrain that makes daily driving feel effortless.
And that is exactly what it does.
The INSTER feels light, easy and uncomplicated. Around town, electric power makes stop-and-go traffic much more relaxing, while the compact dimensions make narrow streets and tight parking spaces almost enjoyable.
It is also one of those cars where you very quickly stop thinking about driving it.
That is meant as a compliment.
There is no learning curve, no feeling that you are controlling something unnecessarily large and no stress when you arrive at a crowded parking garage.
For family life in a city or town, that simplicity is worth a lot.
6. Range & Electric Life: Surprisingly Grown-Up
This was another area where the INSTER surprised us.
For such a small electric car, the usable range feels genuinely good. It does not come across as one of those tiny EVs that only really makes sense if every journey ends back at your own wallbox.
You can use it for normal daily life without constantly watching the battery percentage.
That changes the character of the car considerably.
Instead of feeling like a limited city runabout, the INSTER becomes something you could realistically take on longer family days, weekend trips or the kind of spontaneous adventure where you did not calculate every kilometre before leaving home.
Charging and efficiency also suit the size of the car well.
A small EV should not need an enormous battery to be useful. It needs to make good use of the energy it carries.
And the INSTER does.
For us, the combination of range, efficiency and easy electric driving is one of its strongest arguments.
7. Family Practicality: Small Can Be Enough
Family cars have become enormous.
Sometimes unnecessarily so.
The INSTER is a nice reminder that having a child does not automatically mean you need three rows of seats, a two-metre-wide SUV and a boot large enough to transport half your house.
For a young family, the important questions are simpler.
Can the child seat fit properly?
Can we carry the things we actually use?
Is everyone comfortable?
Can we park the car easily when we arrive?
The INSTER answers those questions surprisingly well.
The flexible rear seating is especially valuable because family life changes from journey to journey. Sometimes passenger space matters. Sometimes luggage space matters. Sometimes somebody falls asleep and suddenly the entire plan revolves around not waking them up.
A car that can adapt is often more useful than a bigger car that cannot.
8. Final Thoughts
The Hyundai INSTER Cross might be one of the most unexpectedly family-friendly small cars we have driven.
It is not perfect. Constantin still has some discussions to settle with the rear design, and naturally there will be families who simply need more luggage room or more passenger space than a car of this size can provide.
But the cleverness of the interior makes it difficult not to like.
The sliding seats are genuinely useful. The open first row makes the cabin feel larger and more practical. The ability to fold everything down and create an almost bed-like space is both slightly ridiculous and absolutely brilliant.
Add a strong electric drivetrain and very usable range for such a compact EV, and you end up with something that feels much more complete than a typical small city car.
For a family of three, especially one that spends a lot of time in town but still wants to escape for little adventures, the INSTER makes a surprising amount of sense.
It is small when you need to park it, clever when you need to pack it and just weird enough to be fun.
And honestly, more family cars could use a little bit of that.
